Ariana Grande celebrates her “most beautiful Nonna” making US chart history
Ariana Grande has shared a new update online, celebrating her “most beautiful Nonna” making US chart history.
Shared on Instagram last night (April 17), the post comes shortly after it was reported that her grandmother – Marjorie “Nonna” Grande – made history by becoming the oldest person to hit the Billboard Hot 100.
The 98-year-old featured on the singer’s latest album ‘Eternal Sunshine’, taking part on the track ‘Ordinary Things’. Following its release, the song earned the 55th spot on last month’s Billboard Hot 100 chart, setting a new record for the oldest person to appear on the chart.
Now, the singer has taken to social media to celebrate her grandmother’s achievement, and hail her as the “most beautiful”.
“Celebrating the one and only, most beautiful Nonna who has now made history for being the senior most person to ever appear on the Billboard Hot100,” she wrote in the caption. “We love and thank you”.
In the post, she shared a photo of her grandmother holding her Hot 100 plaque, which was given to her to celebrate the achievement. Check it out below.
With her accomplishment, Marjorie Grande has taken the title away from the late Fred Stobaugh, who was 96 when ‘Oh Sweet Lorraine’ came out in 2013 and spent a week on the Hot 100. It was accredited to Green Shoe Studio and featured the song’s vocalist Jacob Colgan and its writer, Stobaugh.
Prior to that, Tony Bennett held the title on the charts after ‘Body and Soul’, his 2011 collaborative track with Amy Winehouse spent a week at Number 87 upon its release.
In her feature on ‘Ordinary Things’, the song closes with a clip of her sharing life advice, while reflecting on her relationship with her late husband, Frank. “Never go to bed without kissin’ goodnight,” Nonna shares. “That’s the worst thing to do; don’t ever, ever do that. And if you don’t feel comfortable doing it, you’re in the wrong place – get out.”
She is also credited as a co-songwriter on the track.
In a recent interview with Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe, Grande shared: “I always record my Nonna, because you never know what she’s going to say. I had this 30-minute voice note of her and her friend Shirley talking.”
‘Eternal Sunshine‘ marks Grande’s seventh studio LP. In a four-star review of the album, NME shared: “It’s the most sophisticated project yet from a preternaturally talented vocalist who keeps getting better. Whatever you take away from it, ‘Eternal Sunshine’ definitely isn’t an album you’ll want to wipe from memory.”
