Lil Nas X Candidly Expresses His Sexuality With New Track ‘Trust Me’: ‘This Song Means a Lot to Me’
Lil Nas X has been testing the waters on new music throughout the year, and another previously teased single has finally arrived.
“Trust Me” landed on the Grammy-winning artist’s SoundCloud page on Wednesday (April 24) after fans reacted positively to the snippet earlier in 2024. “this song means a lot to me,” the artist tweeted when announcing the track on X.
Lil Nas X indulges in the bouncy 808s and slithering hi-hats, and gets candid about his sexuality growing up. “Back in middle school, I was fiending for d–k/ 7th grade, sending my homies some pics/ Daddy never knew what I did as a kid/ He would’ve crucified me but/ Trust me, I get it,” he raps.
The “Old Town Road” artist addressed the visceral reaction to his sexual encounter admissions to the early “Trust Me” snippet in March. LNX made sure to let it be known that he’s not doing any of this for shock value.
“I hate explaining myself every time i do anything, but this is not for shock. this is me telling my story, y’all being uncomfortable by it does not make it a gimmick,” he wrote on X at the time. “This is for me and my fans f–k everybody else.”
“Trust Me” finds bouncy production from a pair of frequent collaborators — Ojivolta and Omer Fedi — who contributed to Lil Nas X’s Montero project.
The 25-year-old has been sprinkling new music over on his SoundCloud, previous releases including “Right There,” “Light Again” and “Lean on My Body.”
While Lil Nas X is still gearing up for his Nasarati 2 mixtape, he’s logged only one official streaming service release — when “J Christ” hit DSPs in January, which peaked at No. 69 on the Billboard Hot 100.
