SM Entertainment confirms new Red Velvet music after member Joy calls out the label

K-pop agency SM Entertainment has confirmed that Red Velvet will be releasing music soon, after member Joy voiced her unhappiness over the lack of updates from the label.

Yesterday (June 3), Red Velvet’s Joy shared her concerns over the lack of confirmation and promotion about the group’s upcoming music release through messages on the fan community app Bubble. Notably, the girl group had been slated by SM Entertainment to release a new mini-album in the second quarter of 2024, though few updates have been given since.

“If you search ‘Stars who are coming back in June!!’ there are a number of groups who will appear right? Meanwhile there’s also other groups in our company that would show up,” wrote the K-pop star, per Koreaboo. “Why do they not know about us…?”

“Until when is this going to be a secret? Or did they forget to let people know? Or they can’t? Or maybe they’ll release it next week?” the singer added. “I’m also questioning.”

Following Joy’s comments, SM Entertainment has since confirmed that Red Velvet will release a new mini-album, saying in a statement to TenAsia that the girl group “is planning on making a comeback at the end of June”, per Soompi.

Red Velvet’s upcoming release will come about seven months after their third studio album, ‘Chill Kill’. In a glowing four-star review of the record, NME‘s Tanu I. Raj described it as a “deliciously dark, delightfully macabre” with the group “spinning chilling tales with flawless harmonies at the centre”.

Meanwhile, in March 2024, Red Velvet’s Wendy dropped her sophomore mini-album ‘Wish You Hell’. The project also marked her first solo release since her debut mini-album ‘Like Water’ in 2021.
