Geoff Keighley tempers expectations ahead of Summer Game Fest
Don’t expect loads of new releases to be announced at this year’s Summer Game Fest, as host and creator Geoff Keighley said in a recent Twitch Q&A that this show won’t have many teasers for games that are years away.
We likely won’t be seeing the show’s infamous ‘world premiere’ transition slide too many times, as Keighley said, “This is not a show that has a lot of like, ‘coming in 2026’ or ‘2027’ or teasers for games that are years and years out.”
Rather than loads of new announcements, the E3 replacement will mostly consist of “existing games that have new updates for fans.” So expect to see trailers for DLC, new updates in live-service games, or more information on already announced titles.
Friday, #SummerGameFest begins
A look at what's next in video games!
Here's the trailer I edited to get us in the mood.
Celebrating great games so far in 24, and ones still to come. Thanks @londongrammer

However, while the man himself has tried to temper expectations, that doesn’t mean we should expect no new games at all. He said it’s a “lighter” year, not a quiet year, so there should still be some new projects to get everyone excited. He reckons the show will be around two hours long.
Some people have taken to social media to suggest that the reason this is a “lighter” year for new game announcements is due to all the layoffs and studio closures the industry has faced in the last few years.
In 2024 alone there have been over 8,800 people laid off from the video game industry. When you remove that much talent and shutter so many studios, it’s no wonder we’re seeing fewer games now.
Summer Game Fest is running from Thursday June 6 to Monday June 10.
In other news, a Like a Dragon: Yakuza TV show is coming to Amazon Prime Video in October. After the huge success of the Fallout TV show it should be a strong outing for Kiryu and the gang.
