Conroy first voiced Batman as part of the ‘90s animated TV series and went on to star in over 20 different projects including Rocksteady’s Arkham franchise.
It was confirmed in late 2022 that Conroy had died after a short battle with intestinal cancer, but has posthumously starred in Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League and MultiVersus. Earlier this year, it was reported that Conroy’s Batman would also feature in upcoming DC movie Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part Three and the voice actor would also feature in Amazon Prime Video’s new animated series Batman: Caped Crusader in some capacity.
Now the new voice actor for Batman has been revealed. According to Vanity Fair, Hamish Linklater will voice Batman in Batman: Caped Crusader.
“I never in a million bajillion years imagined that I would actually get the part. Not only had I never been cast to do voiceover work before this, but also—it’s Batman! You don’t go from zero to Mount Olympus,” Linklater said in an interview. “Then I got the call and I screamed so loud. I just ran and grabbed my kids and was just like, ‘Dad’s Batman!’”
Joining him in the animated project are Cristina Ricci (The Addams Family, Yellowjackets) as Catwoman, Jamie Chung as Harley Quinn and Diedrich Bader as Two-Face. The series has been described as a “re-imagining of the Batman mythology, through the visionary lens of executive producers J.J. Abrams, Mat Reeves and Bruce Timm.
The series doesn’t seem to feature Batman’s iconic nemesis The Joker though. Following Conroy’s death, Mark Hamill confirmed he would be stepping down as the voice of The Joker. “Without Batman, crime has no punchline,” he said.
“He was one of my favourite people on the planet, and I loved him like a brother,” Hamill said, paying tribute to Conroy. “He truly cared for the people around him – his decency shone through everything he did. Every time I saw him or spoke with him, my spirits were elevated.”
In other news, Ubisoft has officially announced the release details of the Beyond Good & Evil remaster, with the game coming next week.
