Alicia Silverstone mocked for eating poisonous plant on camera
Clueless star Alicia Silverstone has been mocked online for filming herself eating a berry from a poisonous plant and posting it on social media.
The actress shared a video on her TikTok account after she came across an unusual orange-coloured small fruit while walking in London.
“I’ve just bit into it because it was on the street and we were discussing whether it was a tomato or not,” she says in the video, showing off the berry-like plant and asking fans to identify what it is.
@aliciasilverstone What the heck is this!? I’m in England and can’t figure it out.
Several commenters have pointed out that the berry closely resembles a Jerusalem cherry, also known as solanum pseudocapsicum, which are known to be toxic to humans and can cause vomiting, nausea and fevers.
While Silverstone herself has not updated fans on whether she has had any adverse reaction to eating part of the berry, it has not stopped some social media users from chipping in on the incident.
“This TikTok of a confused Alicia Silverstone eating a fruit off a bush from someone’s front yard in London blissfully unaware that it’s actually a very poisonous form of deadly nightshade has absolutely killed me,” wrote one. “She’s not posted since either rip girl you were great in Clueless.”

This is so silly well NOW I’m invested if former Clueless actress Alicia Silverstone survives eating the death berry she randomly picked from someone’s yard in London https://t.co/nTQaKw6bWx

Are we just not going to talk about Alicia Silverstone poisoning herself by eating Jerusalem Cherries off a bush because she didn't know what they were? Is she still alive? pic.twitter.com/LbUj2poCrj

Teen comedy classic Clueless was released in 1995, written and directed by Amy Heckerling (Fast Times At Ridgemont High, Look Who’s Talking), and is a loose adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma.
Set in Beverly Hill, Silverstone plays Cher Horowitz, a popular and superficial high school student who plays matchmaker for her teachers and dedicates herself to transforming Brittany Murphy’s Tai Frasier from a socially awkward transfer student into one of the popular girls.
@aliciasilverstone What’s up daddy?! Today marks 26 years since #Clueless premiered!
In 2021, Silverstone recreated a memorable scene from the film with her son, lip-syncing along to an argument that Cher had with her father about her outfit. The actress’ son Bear played the role of Cher’s father, complete with a comically oversized suit and glasses. Watch the TikTok video above.
Silverstone has also revealed that Bear has been developing ideas for a potential Clueless sequel.
“One night we were laying in bed and he wrote Clueless Part 2 and what and where Cher would be,” Silverstone told Entertainment Tonight.
“It was unbelievable what he thought. She was an alcoholic, but he didn’t say those words. He was like, ‘She drinks a lot and maybe she’s a makeup artist? Like a professional makeup artist.’”
