Guillermo del Toro disturbed by “angry and territorial” ghosts in Aberdeen hotel room

Guillermo del Toro has provided an update from his “haunted” hotel room in Aberdeen, claiming he was disturbed by “angry and territorial” ghosts.

The Shape Of Water director is currently staying in the Scottish city while filming his version of Frankenstein at Dunecht House.

The upcoming adaptation of Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel stars Oscar Isaac in the titular role, while Satlburn‘s Jacob Elordi will play The Monster. Other cast members include Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) and Mia Goth (Pearl).

In a series of posts on X/Twitter, del Toro has opened up about his passion for ghost hunting while on location.

“Whilst in Aberdeen, I am staying in an old 1800’s hotel. I am in the Most Haunted room of it – which was vacated this morning by one of our producers,” he wrote. “Odd electrical and physical occurrences scared her into leaving asap. Stay tuned – if anything happens I will report.”

He added: “I always stay in ‘the most haunted rooms’ but only once did I experience anything supernatural – the rest of the time: nothing. I have high hopes.

“Nothing has happened yet, but the atmosphere in the room is oppressive and I am not gonna spend much more time there. It may be suggestion, but at this point I kept it but am sleeping in another room – I need 6 hours of sleep to have a good shooting day. I’m stopping there early and late in the day – but something is in that room with me… ”

In a new update, del Toro said he went back into the room after filming wrapped and felt “more than vibes”. He added: “There is something angry and territorial there. A shred of rage,” he wrote.

The director also shared photos of him looking into the mirror in the room and trying to listen to EVP (electronic voice phenomena) on his phone.

Filming on Frankenstein, which is being produced by Netflix, began back in February. It will be the Mexican director’s first feature film since 2022’s Pinocchio, and his thirteenth directorial feature overall. He won the Academy Award for Best Director for 2017’s The Shape of Water, which also picked up Best Picture.

Back in October, del Toro opened up about the Star Wars film that he was once hoping to make, confirming that he had been in line to direct an entry in the series. His entry, he revealed, was meant to focus on Jabba The Hutt, but the project eventually fell through.

“We were doing a lot of stuff, and then it’s not my property, it’s not my money, and then it’s one of those 30 screenplays that goes away,” he said. “Sometimes I’m bitter, sometimes I’m not. I always turn to my team and say, ‘Good practice, guys. Good practice. We designed a great world. We designed great stuff. We learned.’”
