Best thing about ‘Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions’ is the Hagrid meme, says fans

Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions released earlier this month, but fans don’t seem too excited about it.

Developed by Unbroken Studios and published by Warner Bros. Games, Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions allows fans to live out their magical sporting dreams. “Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Quidditch by playing solo or sharing the magic with friends and family,” reads the official description.

The game was released digitally on September 3 and, according to Metacritic, has received a middling response. Of the 17 reviews published, two are positive, one is negative and 14 are mixed with a majority highlighting the low barrier for entry and the lack of depth the game offers fans.

Over on Reddit, fans also seem split on the developers decision to change the rules of the made-up wizarding game as well. In the books, catching the Golden Snitch will give players 150 points and is the only way to end the game but in Quidditch Champions, the Golden Snitch will only reward players with 30 points, with games ending after a team has achieved 100 points.

“It is a fun game and I have enjoyed my time with it so far, but I’m not sure about how much longevity it’ll have. There’s just not really a lot to do,” wrote one fan. “I’d say it’s fun and worth the price but then again, I got it free via PlayStation Plus,” said another.

“It is free with PS+, and that’s about the price I’d be willing to pay for it. It has potential to be fun, but the controls and mechanics leave me wishing for more,” added another fan.

However, the one thing everyone seems to be agreeing on is that including a PS1-era Hagrid mask is the highlight of Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions. The lumpy character design of Hagrid in the original Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone movie tie-in game has long been a favourite of the internet. A player-made mod added the character to Hogwarts Legacy but Unbroken Studios has gone one better – making a mask of the blocky Hagrid an unlockable reward during the first season.

Developers have also shared a roadmap for Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions.

It comes as talk about a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy heats up. Last month, Avalanche Software confirmed it was hiring more staff to work on a new “open world, action RPG”. In early 2024 Warner Bros. interactive president David Haddad confirmed that a “series of other things” were also in the pipeline alongside Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions.

In other news, a new thread on Reddit has revealed what upcoming games fans are most excited for.
