Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine has said Peter Frampton was “talking out of his ass” when he blamed the band for one of his recent shows being cancelled.

The LA thrash metal outfit shelved their scheduled gig at the Virginia Credit Union Live! venue in Richmond, Virginia on September 15 “due to unexpected and unpredictable circumstances”.

Frampton was set to perform there two days later, but had to axe his concert too because of “unforeseen circumstances”.

During a later show in Philadelphia on September 19, the singer-songwriter addressed the cancellation and appeared to claim that Megadeth were responsible for the issues.

“So, we had a show cancelled the other day because of weather,” Frampton told the audience (via Consequence). “And also Megadeth did a soundcheck, I think a couple of days before our show, and after they finished their soundcheck, there was structural damage to the stage.”

He continued: “I’m not blaming them – could have been another band – but it looks pretty like it. So, sorry, Megadeth. I had to rat on you.” Watch the fan-shot video of the moment below.

In response, Megadeth’s team issued a statement about the situation yesterday (September 23). “Megadeth did not even get a chance to sound check at all in Richmond, Virginia contrary to what Peter Frampton reports,” it began.

“Megadeth’s rigger was in the venue’s steel grid system above the stage getting ready to hang the lights when he noticed there was damage to the venue’s grid. He pointed this out immediately to the promoters and the venue.

“It was determined that it was unsafe for Megadeth to hang their production or put the band on stage at the risk of in-house grid failure to support the weight of the touring lighting and sound which could fall on the band, crew members, or audience, as it could cause serious injury or death.”

The message continued: “Therefore, Megadeth, the local promoter, the venue, and booking agents had no other option than to cancel the show.”

In a separate statement, Mustaine commented: “It seems Frampton was misinformed about our show being cancelled. The decision was purely based on safety. It’s disappointing when someone you admire talks out [of] their ass about you.”

Megadeth’s current US tour is due to conclude in Nashville, Tennessee this Saturday (September 28). Frampton has one date left on his schedule; he’ll perform in New York on Thursday (26).

Last month, Megadeth performed their song ‘Liar’ live for the first time since 2006 during a show in California.

Over the summer, the band’s newest bassist James LoMenzo revealed that Megadeth were “actively” working on new music. It came after Megadeth split with longtime bassist David Ellefson in light of allegations against him.
