Brooklyn rapper Ka has died, aged 52

Esteemed independent Brooklyn rapper Ka has died at the age of 52.

Ka – real name Kaseem Ryan – died “unexpectedly” on October 12 at the age of 52, his estate announced via social media. The statement reads: “Born and raised in Brownsville, Brooklyn, Ka lived a life of service – to his city, to his community, to his music. As a 20-year veteran of the New York City Fire Department, he put his life on the line to protect his fellow citizens. Ka rose to the rank of FDNY captain and was a first responder on September 11, 2001 during the attacks on the World Trade Center.”

It continues: “He leaves an extraordinary legacy as a recording artist, including eleven remarkable self-released solo albums. Ka is survived by his wife, mother and sister. We kindly ask that the privacy of Ka’s family and loved ones be respected as they grieve this incalculable loss.”

Kaseem Ryan remained fiercely loyal to the idea of remaining an independent artist throughout his career. He would often host DIY events for his album releases, self-produce his work and even ship out orders himself in order to create a more personal experience between him and his fans.

He issued all of his solo albums through his own label, Iron Works, which was also the name of his debut record. He most recently released the album ‘The Thief Next To Jesus’ in August. Prior to going solo, he was a member of the group Natural Elements and was also in a group called Nightbreed.

Ka first became transfixed with rap music at the age of six, when he heard a song play on the radio. He recalled to Impose: “I knew as a child this was for me—I was chosen for it. It was my music.”

Following the news of his death, several rappers and musicians have paid tribute to the late Brooklyn hero. Alchemist wrote on X: “I always called him a living PROPHET because thats what he was to us. Me and Roc always said when KA rapped it was like he was delivering his words from the top of a mountain off a stone tablet. The truest man and artist I have ever been lucky enough to cross paths with. There is so much I want to say. It was an honor to call you a friend and comrade. Thanks Roc for connecting us. KA, you made all of us better. My condolences to the family. Rest easy Kaseem Ryan aka BROWNSVILLE KA. Till we meet again 🕊.”
