James Gunn confirms a beloved character will debut in ‘Superman’

James Gunn has announced that a beloved character will debut in his upcoming Superman film – find out more below.

Gunn took to social media on Tuesday night (October 15) to announce that Krypto the Superdog will make its live-action debut in his upcoming film alongside the Man of Steel, David Corenswet.

The writer-director’s announcement came in the form of graphics depicting Superman and Krypto sitting side-by-side on a nearby planet as they watch Earth rotate on its axis. Gunn wrote that Krypto’s addition to the film was inspired by his own dog, Ozu, which he had adopted shortly after he began penning the screenplay for Superman.

Gunn explained: “Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him. I remember thinking, “Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?” – and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life. What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than #AdoptAShelterDog Month.”

The upcoming film, now simply titled Superman after it was initially named Superman: Legacy, sees Corenswet take on the titular role. The film is set to arrive in July 2025 and will mark the launch of a new version of the DC Universe.

Helmed by Guardians Of The Galaxy’s James Gunn – who is now the co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran – Superman will also star Rachel Brosnahan as Lois LaneNicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner and more.

In January last year, Peter Safran revealed more about the plot for Superman, telling reporters: “It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks that kindness is old-fashioned.”

The first look at Corenswet as Superman came in May when director James Gunn shared a picture on social media of the actor in costume. However, many fans expressed their dissatisfaction with the character’s new look.

In other news, The Boys star Jack Quaid has revealed that he auditioned for the film but “didn’t get very far” in the casting process.
