‘Solo Levelling: ReAwakening’ still

In anticipation of the release of Solo Levelling’s second season, a new Solo Levelling: ReAwakening film will be coming to cinemas on December 6.

The feature-length movie, which is available with subtitles and dubbed in English, will summarise the first season as well as offer a sneak peek at the first two episodes of the upcoming season.

A synopsis of the film summarises, “Over a decade has passed since a pathway called a ‘gate’ which connects this world and another dimension suddenly appeared, and people with superhuman powers called “hunters” have been awakened.

“Hunters use their superhuman powers to conquer dungeons inside the gates to make a living, and Sung Jin-woo, a hunter of the lowest rank, is considered the Weakest Hunter of All Mankind. One day, he encounters a double dungeon, a high-level dungeon hidden inside a low-level one. In front of a severely wounded Jin-woo, a mysterious quest window pops up. On the verge of death, Jin-woo decides to take on the quest, which makes him the only person who can level up.”

The first season of Solo Levelling, adapted from the Korean web novel of the same name written by Chugong, arrived on Crunchyroll on January 6. Season two is set to arrive in January next year. The adaptation was first announced at Anime Expo 2022, and has been produced by A-1 Pictures and directed by Shunsuke Nakashige.

The original web novel series ran for 14 books, published between 2016 and 2021, while the webtoon ran for nine volumes from 2018 to 2021. You can watch the season two trailer below.

Earlier this year, NME gave the first season a four-star review, saying: “The only thing holding Solo Levelling from perfection is the lack of emotional depth from the series’ supporting characters, who largely function as plot devices for Jin-woo’s journey. Despite constant peril and several gruesome deaths, there’s a dearth of tension due to the audience’s lack of investment in the people around Jin-woo. And since Jin-woo himself is protected by plot armour, viewers almost never have to worry about the danger he puts himself in.

“Nevertheless, Solo Levelling’s narrative surprises, brisk pace and visual spectacle more than makes up for its flaws. Combine that with the joys of Jin-woo’s ascent and the intriguing mystery of his omniscient interface and you get an addictive anime that deserves all the hype it’s getting.”
