’28 Years Later’ plot details leaked by Ralph Fiennes: “It centres on a young boy”
Ralph Fiennes appears to have leaked plot details for the upcoming apocalypse sequel 28 Years Later.
The third instalment in the franchise, which began with 2002’s 28 Days Later and was followed by 2007’s 28 Weeks Later, will see the return of Cillian Murphy as Jim, while Danny Boyle is back in the director’s chair.
Details on the plot have so far been scarce, though Fiennes – who is joining the franchise – has let slip the synopsis in a new interview.
Confirming that two of the planned three films have been shot, he told IndieWire: “Britain is 28 years into this terrible plague of infected people who are violent, rabid humans with a few pockets of uninfected communities.
“And it centers on a young boy who wants to find a doctor to help his dying mother. He leads his mother through this beautiful northern English terrain. But of course, around them hiding in forests and hills and woods are the infected. But he finds a doctor who is a man we might think is going to be weird and odd, but actually is a force for good.”
As well as Fiennes, 28 Years Later will welcome Jodie Comer and Aaron Taylor-Johnson to the cast.
Boyle is directing the first film, while The Marvels‘ Nia DaCosta is set to helm the follow-up, called The Bone Temple.
Reports recently emerged that Boyle filmed 28 Years Later on several adapted iPhone 15s (via Wired).
Meanwhile, while speaking to NME back in 2022, Boyle teased that the third movie centred on “a lovely idea”, as he explained writer Alex Garland’s then-incarnation of a 28 Weeks Later sequel called 28 Months Later.
“It feels like a very good time actually,” he said. “It’s funny, I hadn’t thought about it until you just said it, and I remembered ‘Bang, this script!’ which is again set in England, very much about England. Anyway, we’ll see… who knows?”
