Viewers have reacted after Pharrell Williams was seen wearing sunglasses and a cap on The Graham Norton Show.

The music star appeared on Friday’s (November 1) episode to promote his new LEGO biopic Piece By Piece, guesting on the show alongside Billy Crystal, Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer and Michael Kiwanuka.

However, fans were quick to notice Williams wearing sunglasses in the studio, one writing on X (formerly Twitter): “Why is Pharrell Williams wearing sunglasses on Graham Norton……you’re embarrassing me in front of Billy Crystal.”

“#GrahamNortonShow lot of respect for Pharrell Williams as a musician, but I lose all interest when someone is wearing sunglasses on a show like this,” another added.

“Sunglasses – just rude. (Unless he has some medical reason) #thegrahamnortonshow,” a third added.

While unconfirmed, the sunglasses may be related to Williams’s synesthesia – which he discussed on the show – with those experiencing the condition known to experience sensory overload.

Last month, Williams was disrupted by PETA protestors during a screening of Piece By Piece at the BFI London Film Festival, where they unfurled a banner reading “Pharrell: Stop Supporting Killing Animals For Fashion”, referring to his role as the men’s creative director of fashion house Louis Vuitton.

In response, the musician said: “God bless you. Rome wasn’t built in a day and the changes that they see, they don’t happen overnight. It takes a lot of planning and we are working out those things. They wanted to be heard so we heard them.”

Speaking afterwards, PETA’s senior campaigns manager Kate Werner said: “While Pharrell’s life story is told in this navel-gazing film, animals are confined in filth on farms before their heads are bashed in and their skin is ripped off while they’re still conscious – all so pieces of their bodies can be made into Louis Vuitton’s fleeting fashion pieces.

“PETA is calling on Pharrell to use his power for good, stop being complicit in cruelty, and push Louis Vuitton into the 21st century by refusing to use wild-animal skins and fur.”

Williams was previously disrupted by a protestor at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

In NME‘s four-star review of Piece By Piece, we wrote: “Whether this is a one-off or not, you have to applaud the bravery in making a LEGO-crafted documentary. For sure, you’ll leave the cinema happy.”
