NME’s latest star of The Cover, Nemahsis, has compiled an exclusive playlist to accompany the story’s launch – check it out below.

The Palestinian-Canadian artist is on this week’s (November 11) edition of The Cover, a renewal of NME’s commitment to supporting emerging talent across the globe on a weekly basis. Every week, a rising artist will feature on The Cover – you can read the profile of Nemahsis here, written by Zoya Raza-Sheikh and featuring photography by Norman Wong.

The Cover is accompanied by an exclusive playlist curated by Nemahsis. She has chosen tracks by the likes of Imogen Heap, Sigur Rós, Panic! At The Disco, Billy Joel, Lorde and Mk.gee, among others, for a playlist titled ‘A Motion Sickness You Can’t Hurl Off’. Listen to the full playlist on Spotify below and on Apple Music.

In The Cover, Nemahsis speaks about the discrimination she’s faced throughout her life – both as an artist, and in her childhood. “I got bullied a lot in school,” she recalls. “Nobody would want to sit next to me because I was ‘dirty’ or ‘contagious’. I always had to stand up for myself. It’s all I’ve ever known.”

The musician also explained the idea behind the title of her debut album, ‘Verbathim’, linking it to how she was treated by the music industry after the events of October 7, 2023. “It felt biblical and like someone [was] holding my tongue,” she explains. “I wanted [the title] to be as if someone grabbed my tongue in the middle of saying ‘verbatim’. It’s going to be historical, especially when Palestine is free.”
