The Last Of Us will be with us sooner than we expected, according to a positive update from HBO.

The first season of The Last Of Us premiered in early 2023 and a second season was confirmed the same month after the show broke viewing figures.

Last year, it was confirmed production would begin at the start of 2024 with the second season due to air at some point in 2025. A brief teaser was shared in August with the show still on track to release next year.

Now HBO have confirmed when season two will be released. According to chairman Casey Bloys, The Last Of Us will return in “spring 2025” (via IGN).

Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie in the show, has also teased a “darker” second season. “It’s really a story about revenge, and a continuation from the first season about the dangers of unconditional love,” they explained.

Pedro Pascal’s Joel is also set to return and the pair will be joined by Beef star Young Mazino as Jesse, Isabela Merced as Dina and Danny Ramirez as Manny. Ariela Barer, Tati Gabrielle, Spencer Lord, Jeffrey Wright and Catherine O’Hara will also feature alongside Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby Anderson.

While there are currently only two The Last Of Us games to pull from, showrunner Craig Mazin has suggested the show could run for four seasons. “It can end up being three or five. But four seems like a good number. Some seasons, because of the story we’re telling, will need fewer episodes and some will need more.

“The best news is the audience wants more but we will not indulge a desire for more simply to make them happier,” he added.

Game creator Neil Druckmann took a similar stance with The Last Of Us Part 3. “Just because something is successful, people think there’s all this pressure and we have to make a sequel. That’s not the case,” he said. However a new documentary on the making of the games has revealed that there’s a “concept” for a third game. “It does feel like there’s probably one more chapter to this story.”
