‘The Voice’ US winner Sundance Head accidentally shoots himself while hunting
Sundance Head, the former winner of The Voice US, accidentally shot himself while out hunting near his Texas ranch this week.
On Friday (November 15), the country singer, who won the TV competition in 2016, was hospitalised after firing one shot into his own stomach, and is currently in a stable condition.
The singer’s agent told CBS News that Head was out hunting alone when his firearm “slipped out of the holster, hit the side of the jeep and discharged into his stomach area”.
The Texan had previously been a semi-finalist on American Idol in 2007, but went further on the 2016 season of The Voice, winning the competition under the mentorship of Blake Shelton.

In a Facebook post, his wife Misty Head wrote: “It was not his hunting rifle and no nobody shot him. He was out of the vehicle reaching in to grab his 22 when he grabbed it the 22 came out of its holster and hit the exterior of the Jeep just right and went off. Sundance said it happened so fast and he could see the bullet dislodging.”
She added that the bullet “went in above his navel and lodged into his abdominal wall” and missed “all vital organs.”
“He will not require surgery as they are not removing the bullet,” she added. “I’m sure [his doctor] said why but my head is in a fog right now. Him being on the bigger side was a good thing. Bullet is in his fatty tissue.”
Misty Head also clarified that her husband did not have his mobile phone with him, but flagged down another vehicle, with that driver calling him an ambulance.
Sundance Head is the son of the successful 1970s singer Roy Head and has released three studio albums, most recently 2022’s ‘Starting Again’.
