The iconic ‘80s band haven’t shared a record of new material in nearly a decade, with their last studio LP arriving in the form of 2015’s critically acclaimed ‘Music Complete’.
Over recent months, some fans began speculating that a new release was on the way, along with details of new tour dates planned for the new year. Now though, the band have shared an official statement on their website and confirmed that there are no announcements for a new album or live shows on the horizon.
“We always want to keep our fans informed of the latest news about New Order, and we always share official news across our social media channels and our website, first,” the post began.
“We are aware of news that claims the band will be releasing a new studio album and will be embarking on a world tour, news that is incorrect,” it added, also urging fans to only believe updates shared through the band’s official social media platforms.
While New Order haven’t shared an album since ‘Music Complete’, they did return in 2020 with their first new material in five years. This came in the form of single ‘Be A Rebel’. Speaking to NME about the track at the time, drummer Stephen Morris said the release was a standalone, but had the potential to lead to a wider release.
“It’s kind of carrying on from ‘Music Complete’. It’s a very dance-y song,” he said. “It’s just a one-off at the minute. We thought we’d start with one and then see how it goes.”
‘Music Complete’ was the first album the band recorded since bass player Peter Hook left in 2007, and featured the return of keyboard player Gillian Gilbert.
Since the 2020 single, the band has yet to share any new music, although they dropped a deluxe box set reissue of their 1986 studio album ‘Brotherhood’ in September.
Originally released via Factory Records, New Order’s fourth album saw them further delve into both post-punk and electronic, dividing each side of the record with two distinctively different sonic atmospheres. The reissue includes a vinyl LP of the original album, as well as two CDs — one featuring a re-mastered version of the original album and one containing nine unreleased tracks and demos from a 1985 recording session in Japan.
It marked the fourth limited edition box set from the band. Last year, they celebrated the 40th anniversary of their seminal track ‘Blue Monday’, and announced reissued editions of their classic compilation ‘Substance 1987’ to mark the milestone – the band’s biggest-selling album to date.
The previous year they announced an expanded edition of their 1985 album ‘Low-Life’, and in 2020, they released a special box set for their seminal second album ‘Power Corruption & Lies’.
In more recent New Order news, last month the members helped mark World Mental Health Day by joining forces with CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) for a suicide prevention video.
The video was shared across the band’s and the charity’s social media platforms and created in a bid to raise awareness for those struggling with suicidal thoughts.
