Christopher Nolan has said that it’s “magical” to see Interstellar in cinemas again, 10 years after its release.

The film, starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Matt Damon is set in a dystopian future and sees a group of astronauts travelling into outer space to find a new planet for humans to colonise.

Back in April, Paramount Pictures announced the re-release of the film during its presentation to cinema owners and executives at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

They also announced that Interstellar would be shown in 70mm IMAX prints, as well as on digital screens.

Nolan filmed Interstellar with a combination of 35mm anamorphic film and 65mm IMAX. At the time of release, he encouraged cinema goers to see the movie in 70mm IMAX – something that led to weeks of sold-out showings. Warner Bros., who co-produced the movie, worked with Paramount on the revival screenings (as per Variety).

Now, in a new interview with Associated Press, Nolan has opened up about the joy he felt seeing his film return to the big screen once more.

“I was just so gratified by the response,” Nolan told AP. “It’s really thrilling when people respond to your work at any point. But 10 years later, to have new audiences coming and experiencing it in the way that we’d originally intended it on the big IMAX screens and in particular on those IMAX film prints? It’s really rewarding to see that it continues to have a life.”

“It just shows our industry once again that audiences truly understand the difference between a communal, big screen theatrical experience that they crave even on films that they’ve had the opportunities to see in the home,” Nolan continued. “That theatrical experience that we all know and love is so powerful and so exciting. It’s a very clear demonstration of it, especially coming amidst all the great successes right now, Wicked, Gladiator 2, Moana 2.

“Audiences are coming out in droves for that experience that we all love so much.”

He concluded: “It was pretty magical to see a full house on that film. It was a very special thing to see, 10 years later.”

Back in July, fans of Christopher Nolan celebrated his 54th birthday and reflected on his legacy in the world of cinema. The British director, known for blockbuster films such as Inception, The Dark Knight and Dunkirk, is one of the highest-grossing and critically acclaimed filmmakers of his generation.

Fans of one of Nolan’s most beloved films, The Dark Knight also came together to celebrate the 16-year anniversary of its release earlier this year, with many praising it as “the greatest superhero movie” of all time.

“The first comic book film to ever receive major Academy Awards recognition as well as the first comic book film to ever cross the $1B mark at the global box office,” one person posted on X. “The film completely revolutionised the superhero genre & modern day blockbuster filmmaking overall, becoming a massive critical, financial, & cultural phenomenon.”

Nolan’s most recent release was Oppenheimer, which was the biggest winner at the Oscars and the Baftas this year.

In a five-star review of the filmNME said: “Not just the definitive account of the man behind the atom bomb, Oppenheimer is a monumental achievement in grown-up filmmaking. For years, Nolan has been perfecting the art of the serious blockbuster – crafting smart, finely-tuned multiplex epics that demand attention; that can’t be watched anywhere other than in a cinema, uninterrupted, without distractions. But this, somehow, feels bigger.”
