Daniel Craig snubbed for BAFTA Best Actor – fans furious: “What the hell is happening”

Daniel Craig

Former James Bond Daniel Craig missed out on a BAFTA Best Actor nomination for his role in the drama Queer, which has brought a furious reaction from fans online.

Adrien Brody, Timothée Chalamet, Colman Domingo, Ralph Fiennes, Hugh Grant, and Sebastian Stan made the list for the category, with Craig missing out. This is despite Luca Guadagnino’s film earning the actor Golden Globe and SAG award nominations in recent weeks.

On X (formerly Twitter), one user remarked: “So Daniel Craig got into SAG but missed BAFTA…seriously, what the hell is happening this season?” Another raged: “THE BAFTAS!! THE BAFTAS OF ALL PEOPLE SNUB DANIEL CRAIG BUT HE GETS IN FOR SAG??? AM I EVEN LIVING ANYMORE???”

One fan alluded to the fact that, despite being in the spotlight for over 20 years as a star, he only has one BAFTA nomination, for his 2006 Bond debut Casino Royale, eventually losing to Forrest Whitaker for The Last King of Scotland.

They wrote: “think Daniel probably killed somebody’s grandma the way he constantly gets snubbed by baftas”.

Queer sees Craig play an openly gay man living in Mexico City, who falls for a handsome ex-soldier (played by Drew Starkey). One user suggested the fact that Craig is playing a gay character may have lead to the snub, linking it to Andrew Scott’s omission for All Of Us Strangers in last year’s awards.

They mused: “Baftas snubbing Andrew Scott last year and Daniel Craig this year…hmmm”.

It should be said that Karla Sofia Gascon was nominated for playing an LGBTQ+ character in Emilia Pérez, while openly gay actors Cynthia Erivo and Colman Domingo are also honoured.

Queer was a hit on the film festival circuit, with NME’s four-star review describing it as “far from James Bond” and that Craig “one of his best performances to date” in the lead role. Recently, the actor said he would never have made the film had he still been in the role of James Bond, saying it would have looked “reactionary”. Meanwhile Craig talked about his struggles with fame while playing 007.

The BAFTA Film Awards take place on February 16, hosted by David Tennant. The nominations for this year’s awards have drama Conclave and musical Emilia Pérez leading the race, with 12 and 11 nominations respectively. You can read the full list of nominations here.
