Grand Theft Auto 6 fans are worried new game could cost $100

The latest report about Grand Theft Auto 6 has fans worried the base game could cost $100.

Grand Theft Auto 6 was officially unveiled in December 2023 with a first look trailer and according to creators Rockstar Games, will be released at some point this year. However updates have been few and far between. All fans know for sure is that the highly-anticipated sequel is set in the Miami-inspired Vice City.

However a new report from gaming analyst Matthew Ball has fans worried Grand Theft Auto 6 will be more expensive than your standard video game. “Grand Theft Auto 6 could re-establish packed video game prices after decades of deflation despite rampant cost growth,” he wrote before claiming that other studios are “hoping” Rockstar charges up to $100 (£82) for the game, so they can increase the price of their titles.

Typically a standard AAA video game costs around £70, but developers do charge more for deluxe editions that offer bonus items and early access.

Sharing the report on Reddit, one user wrote: “We don’t want that, do we lads. $100 for a game is crazy. Even $70 is pushing it.”

“I’m absolutely not okay with spending $100 on the base version of the game. That’s insane,” added another while a third wrote: “I’ve already been getting real picky with games over these past few years. If I gotta be more picky, so be it.”

However others weren’t as worried. “I’ll pay whatever the price is .. I am the problem,” said one user. “I have no problem spending 100 or more, wouldn’t even give it a second thought,” explained another. “For a game from Rockstar, this is good value. However, other companies will think they can do the same,” added one fan.

In 2023, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive (which publishes Grand Theft Auto) Strauss Zelnick claimed that in the future, games could be charged on a “per-hour” basis following subscription-based services like Netflix and Xbox Game Pass putting up their prices.

However Take-Two released a statement shortly afterwards that said Strauss was “outlining the overall, general pricing convention for entertainment, in no way did he suggest the need for a new pricing method for core games – and certainly not hourly rates.”

Earlier this year, Strauss said Grand Theft Auto 6 would be “worth waiting for” after rumours about a delay. “I think it will be extraordinary,” he added. “We definitely listen to feedback from fans but remember, the biggest hits are always the ones that are unexpected. Everything we do has to be new and different, not derivative. I think it will be breathtaking”.

In other news, David Lynch has been described as “your favourite game developer’s favourite creator” as the gaming industry pays tribute to the film iconic, following his death last week.
