Check out the unsettling first trailer for pop music horror ‘Opus’ – starring ‘The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri

Ayo Edebiri in ‘Opus’

The first trailer for the upcoming horror Opus is out now – get a first look at lead actors Ayo Edebiri and John Malkovich here.

Edebiri, who’s best known for playing Sydney Adamu in The Bear, takes on the role of young writer Ariel Ecton, while two-time Oscar winner Malkovich plays Alfred Moretti, a legendary pop star who disappeared 30 years ago. Ecton is sent to visit Moretti, who has recently resurfaced, but then, surrounded by obsessed fans, realises that she’s in the middle of his perilous plans.

At the beginning of the trailer, word comes out that Moretti is back to offer “an exclusive listening experience” to one winner. While Ecton’s excited to have won, she soon realises something isn’t quite right as she’s greeted by an unnerving individual – and things get more strange when she’s told Moretti requires everyone to shave, while all guests are watched via security cameras.

“What is it that you guys do?” Ecton asks Moretti, as he responds, “Would you like to see?”

Later on in the Opus trailer, Ecton asks another character, “Is this not alarming to you?”

Directed by Mark Anthony Green, A24’s Opus is set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 27, before coming to cinemas on March 14. Also in the cast are Juliette Lewis, Murray Bartlett, Amber Midthunder, Stephanie Suganami, Young Mazino and Tatanka Means.

Meanwhile, Edebiri is expected to return for the fourth season of The Bear, following the third in June last year. The fourth season was renewed last March, with filming expected to commence this year.

NME gave the third season – for which Edebiri received a Golden Globes nomination – a four-star review, writing: “Cracking along with its usual mix of slow-burns and fast-spurts, the balance in season three is just right. From Marcus poignantly delivering the eulogy at his mother’s funeral to Sydney dealing with her father as she settles on a new place to live to the pregnancy of Carmy’s sister Natalie (Abby Elliott), everyone gets a moment or two to shine. Once again, The Bear has come out of the oven baked to perfection; its pursuit of excellence puts other shows to shame.”
