No Selena Gomez and ‘Challengers’ snubbed: film fans lament “insane” Oscars shocks

The Oscars nominations have been revealed and there are several snubs that film fans are not happy about.

Jacques Audiard’s original musical thriller Emilia Pérez leads the pack with a massive 13 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress for Karla Sofía Gascón and Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña.

Brady Corbet’s architectural epic The Brutalist and Jon M. Chu’s starry Broadway adaptation Wicked came in tied for second place, with 10 nominations each. Other movies with multiple nods include Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown and papal drama Conclave with eight apiece, and Sean Baker’s Anorawhich received six nominations.

However, as ever, there were some notable omissions. Luca Guadagnino missed out twice with his 2024 movies, Queer and Challengers, to the surprise of film fans. Also missing out were Jamie Lee Curtis (The Last Showgirl), Margaret Qualley (The Substance), Nicole Kidman (Babygirl), Selena Gomez (Emilia Pérez), Denzel Washington (Gladiator II) and Angelina Jolie (Maria).

Fans were particularly surprised that Challengers was snubbed, especially for Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ score, which was described as “fucking insane” and one of the “biggest snubs” in the history of the awards.

“history will not look kindly on Challengers Oscars snub,” one X/Twitter user wrote.

Also missing out was Kneecap, which neither the band nor fans were happy about.

The semi-autobiographical comedy-drama based on the Irish hip-hop trio of the same nameKneecap had been tipped as a contender in both the Best International Feature Film and Best Original Song categories, but today’s nomination announcement revealed that they were shut out of both.

The Northern Irish band, comprising of Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí, shared their reaction to being snubbed on social media, posting “Fuck the Oscars. Free Palestine.” on X and Instagram.
