John Ross Bowie will return for ‘The Big Bang Theory’ spin-off series

The Big Bang Theory

A fan of hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory, John David Bowie, has been announced as joining the forthcoming spin-off to the show that is currently in development.

Announced in 2023, details of the new show are unknown at this point, although creator Chuck Lorre said the show would be “derived” from the original series, which ran from 2007-2019. Bowie will return as Barry Kripke, a colleague and rival of the show’s lead Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons).

Deadline reported that Bowie will be joining cast members Kevin Sussman (Stuart Bloom), Brian Posehn (Bert Kibbler) and Lauren Lapkus (Denise), all of whom will be reprising their Big Bang Theory roles for this new offshoot. Development was delayed due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes in Hollywood, but is said to still be going ahead.

Reacting to the news on Instagram, Bowie posted “Exciting news from @deadline… pardon me.. deadwine”, referring to Kripke’s speech impediment in the show.

Scheduled to debut on streaming service Max in America, the show would be the fourth in The Big Bang Theory Universe. Alongside the original, prequel series Young Sheldon ran for seven seasons and 141 episodes between 2017 and 2024. A spin-off of that show, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, debuted last October.

The Big Bang Theory remains a beloved show nearly six years after its finale. In September, James Earl Jones’ appearance on the sit-com went viral after his death, with many sharing it to memorialise the actor.

The show’s stars have also expressed a desire to make appearances on the forthcoming project, with Kaley Cuoco (Penny) saying she would “100 per cent” be interested in being involved. “I spent 12 years playing that role, and it really set off my career” she revealed. “I owe a lot to that character, to that show, to Chuck Lorre”.
