The third season of Mike White’s comedy-drama series debuts on Sunday night (February 16) on HBO in the US, with UK viewers able to watch on Sky and NOW TV from the early hours of Monday morning.
After seasons set in Hawaii and Sicily, the new episodes see the show relocate to a new branch of the luxury hotel chain – this time in Thailand. Among the new cast are BLACKPINK’s Lisa, making her acting debut, as well as Jason Isaacs, Walton Goggins, Michelle Monaghan, Carrie Coon, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Parker Posey, Leslie Bibb and Scott Glenn.
Lisa, who herself is Thai, has said: “It’s pretty new to me, but I think it’s similar to shooting music videos. I’m excited for my fans to see it,” adding that it was great “to be back home, to have Thai food every day.”
In a four-star review of season three, NME wrote: “A little sweetness definitely helps to balance out the prevailing saltiness. As the season progresses, the sneaky intricacy of White’s plotting begins to yield surreal, shocking and genuinely hilarious moments. No one can write a scene where one character pretends not to remember another quite as exquisitely as White. Tanya may be gone, but this transgressive soap opera remains unique and completely jaw-dropping.”
What happened to Belinda in The White Lotus season one?
Natasha Rothwell’s Belinda Lindsey is the sole familiar face from the previous seasons to make an appearance in the new episodes.
Belinda was the spa manager at the Hawaii resort of The White Lotus is season one. A sympathetic character, her storyline primarily revolved around her interactions with Jennifer Coolidge’s Tanya McQuoid, a wealthy customer who is grieving for her mother.
Tanya is initially impressed by Belinda’s caring demeanour and appreciates her interest in her life. She invites Belinda to dinner and makes a generous offer to fund Belinda’s dream of starting her own wellness business.
Belinda excitedly draws up a business plan for the business; however, as time passes, Tanya becomes more and more distracted by a burgeoning romance with fellow hotel patron Greg (Jon Gries). Belinda eventually comes to realise that Tanya’s generosity came from a place of insecurity, having been taken aback by Belinda’s kindness.
At the end of season one, Tanya coldly rebuffs Belinda’s business proposal, saying she wants to end her dependency on transactional relationships. Instead, she leaves Belinda a large sum of cash as a gesture of severance. Belinda is crushed, and discards the business plan.
With her return in season three, Belinda has apparently relocated to Thailand – but will her dreams of starting her own wellness centre come any closer to reality? Or will her experiences with the super-rich continue to leave her dispirited?
