The Wanted’s Max George opens up about “setback” after surgery
The Wanted‘s Max George has given an update on his health and has opened up about the “setback” he experienced after his surgery.
Back in December, the singer told fans via social media that he had been hospitalised after some tests revealed “issues” with his heart. He said that he initially was “feeling really unwell” and was having some tests done. It was later confirmed that he would need surgery for a heart condition.
He went on to explain that he had “a 2:1 block” in his heart, meaning that his heart beats slower or more irregularly than it should. He underwent heart surgery to have a pacemaker fitted shortly afterwards, and was discharged from hospital in time for Christmas Day.
George previously revealed that he had thought was “going to die” after he was rushed to hospital with heart issues. Speaking to The Sun, the singer said at one point he was so convinced he wouldn’t make it, that he took out his phone and started spelling out what to do with his assets.
“It was quite close that night, it really felt like my neck was closing up and that’s when the sort of panic really kicked in. I felt like I was dying. It was the worst, I felt emotional,” he said.
Now, George has taken to his official Instagram account and shared that he has recently undergone a second operation to fix an issue with his pacemaker’s wires.
“A few weeks ago I had to go back into hospital after having some physical symptoms in my chest. It turned out that one of the leads was placed too far into my heart,” began the caption of his post. “The second surgery took about 2 hours. Luckily, it was a success and they kindly let me listen to Oasis the whole time!
“It’s been a setback, but it’s just one of those things. I’ve had a few complications the last couple of months but I’m having loads of tests to make sure everything is all good. It can take a few weeks / months for the inflammation of my heart to subside (myocarditis) but I’m sure I’ll be back on top form in no time! Thanks everyone for all your lovely messages and support through what’s been a pretty rough time. Means a lot.”
Speaking to The Sun about his second operation, the singer shared: “I thought I was on the road to recovery but when I was told I needed a second operation I was nervous, as pulling the pacemaker wires out of the heart wall risks bleeding on the heart. I didn’t have a choice, though. I had to have it done.”
George’s latest health updates comes after he had previously shared with his fans, that he had gone back into hospital again last month.
Taking to Instagram at the time, he explained that he had been feeling an odd sensation since having the pacemaker fitted and asked fans if they knew anyone who had the same experience.
When he was discharged from hospital late last month, George explained that he wasn’t completely in the clear as the doctors found there was more investigation needed into a potential issue with his lungs.
He also shared an image after the surgical procedure, showing that the pacemaker had been placed under a tattoo that reads ‘04.08.1988’ – the birthdate of his former bandmate Tom Parker, who passed away in March 2022 at the age of 33 after battling brain cancer.
