Watch Tate McRae perform ‘Sports Car’ and ‘Dear God’ on ‘Saturday Night Live’
Tate McRae performed ‘Sports Car’ and ‘Dear God’ on Saturday Night Live yesterday (March 1). Check it out below.
It marked the Canadian pop star’s second appearance as musical guest, following her performance of her breakthrough hits ‘Greedy’ and ‘Grave’ on the show in 2023.
Now, following the release of her new album ‘So Close To What‘, she returned to perform two songs from the LP. She joined an episode which also saw Mike Myers impersonate a chainsaw wielding Elon Musk, during a spoof of the recent meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
McRae appeared between skits to deliver a live rendition of ‘Sports Car’, which saw her enlist her signature high-octane choreography as she danced with a crowd of reporters in a ‘Thriller’-esque storyline that saw them gradually close in on her. Later, she sang a stripped-back version of ‘Dear God’. Check out both performances below.
Last month, McRae opened up about comparisons between her and Britney Spears, saying she finds them both “flattering and scary”. She added: “It’s such a crazy statement because no one can compare to Britney Spears. It’s like comparing someone to Michael Jackson! That’s the blueprint!”
In a four-star review of ‘So Close To What’, NME noted that McRae’s producers (OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder and Kylie Minogue collaborator Lostboy) “conjure fresh, club-ready beats with nods to glossy floor fillers from the flip phone era”.
It continued: “The slinky ‘Miss Possessive’ recalls Ciara and Pussycat Dolls (again), while ‘I Know Love’ and ‘Means I Care’ channel the dancehall sass of early Rihanna. ‘Revolving Door’, a swirling rave ballad about a toxic relationship, suggests one of the headier, more experimental tracks from Britney Spears’ 2003 album ‘In The Zone’.”
The review went on to say: “The result is a rock-solid collection of bops that gives McRae space to grow in the future. She’s great at sultry and self-confident moments, but ‘So Close To What’ proves she has other shades in her colour palette.”
‘So Close To What’ follows McRae’s second studio album ‘Think Later‘. In a four-star review of the LP, NME shared: “McRae is evidently still wrestling with her ambitions. ‘Think Later’, however, contains enough intrigue to suggest that this is the work of an artist finally honing their identity, dancing and sparkling all the way.”
In other news, the singer recently joined Troye Sivan on stage at Sivan and Charli XCX’s ‘SWEAT’ joint tour in Los Angeles as a special guest to perform ‘You’, her collab track with the ‘Rush’ singer.
McRae will head on an 80-date worldwide tour next month, with shows and festivals across South America, North America, Europe and the UK. You can find tickets here for the UK shows and here for the US leg. Find a full list of tour dates here.
