NewJeans’ Hanni drops acoustic cover of Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘lacy’
Hanni of K-pop girl group NewJeans (also known as NJZ) has shared a new acoustic cover of Olivia Rodrigo‘s ‘lacy’.
On March 3, NewJeans’ Hanni uploaded a video of herself performing ‘lacy’ – a track off Rodrigo’s 2023 album ‘Guts’ – to the band’s independent Instagram page. The two-minute-long clip features the K-pop idol playing her acoustic guitar as she sings, staying faithful to the original’s instrumentation.
“Lacy, oh Lacy, skin like puff pastry / Aren’t you the sweetest thing on this side of Hell? / Dear angel Lacy, eyes white as daisies / Did I ever tell you that I’m not doin’ well?” She croons.
‘lacy’ marks the most recent in a series of covers Hanni has shared since her debut with the band. Other songs she’s shared covers of in the past include her renditions of Sarah Kang’s ‘once in a moon’ and ‘Best Part’ by Daniel Caesar and H.E.R..
The cover also comes several days since NJZ began teasing new music on Instagram with instrumental snippets and new animated logos, ahead of their headlining set at ComplexCon Hong Kong this month. The quintet previously announced plans to preview new music as part of the set.
The band’s parents, who launched an Instagram page dedicated to promote the girl group under their new moniker, recently accused HYBE chairman Bang Si-hyuk of attempting to “interfere” with their ComplexCon appearance.
ADOR would later deny these claims as well as make a public request for the ComplexCon team to “work with ADOR as they move forward with the performance” in accordance with the band’s contract with the label.
