George Lowe, the voice behind cult cartoon character Space Ghost, has died aged 67.

Deadline reported that the actor’s friend, Marvin Boone, shared news of his passing on Facebook. “I’m beyond devastated. My Zobanian brother and best friend for over 40 years, George Lowe, has passed away after a long illness. A part of me had also died” he wrote.

“He was a supremely talented Artist and Voice actor. A true warm-hearted Genius. Funniest man on Earth too. I’ve stolen jokes from him for decades. He stole some of mine. He was also the voice of Space Ghost and so much more”.

Lowe was best known as the voice of Space Ghost in the surreal live-action/animated hybrid show Space Ghost Coast To Coast. The character was a superhero who worked as the host of a parody talk show set in an animated world who interviewed live action guests in an off-kilter fashion.

The show initially ran from 1994-2001 on Cartoon Network, and then was revived two more times in the ‘00s. High profile guests included Thom Yorke, Björk, and Jim Carrey. The character also appeared in various animated spin-offs and crossovers, all voiced by Lowe.

Outside of the character, Lowe also made appearances on the animated shows American Dad, Robot Chicken, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force. In film, he provided an uncredited voiceover for the George Lucas-produced comedy Radioland Murders.

It was reported in 2023 that Lowe has been experiencing some health issues that required nursing home care at his home in Florida. Billy West, famous for his roles as the voice of various characters in Futurama and as Bugs Bunny in Space Jam, paid tribute on X (formerly Twitter).

“RIP My friend and colleague George Lowe,” he wrote. “He was mighty and one of the best of the best VOs (voice overs) ever. Very generous of spirit and very kind… and funny funny funny. He will be missed”.
