Shannen Doherty’s Oscars In Memoriam omission was “messed-up”, says ‘90210’ co-star
Shannen Doherty’s Beverly Hills 90210 co-star, Jennie Garth, has criticised the actor being left out of the Oscars’ In Memoriam tribute.
On July 13 last year, Doherty passed away aged 53 after a nine-year battle with breast cancer. She was best known for the role Brenda Walsh in Beverly Hills, 90210 from 1990-84, returning to the part from the show’s reboot 90210 from 2008-09.
She also found success as Prue Halliwell in supernatural series Charmed, which she appeared in from 1998-2001, as well as the cult ‘80s film Heathers. Despite this, she was not included in the In Memoriam segment that was broadcast during the Academy Awards.
On Sunday (March 2), Morgan Freeman presented the Oscars tradition, where members of the film industry who have died in the past year are remembered. Freeman opened with a tribute to his friend and co-star, Gene Hackman, before a video that celebrated the lives of David Lynch, Maggie Smith, Shelley Duvall, and others.
Jennie Garth was Doherty’s co-star on Beverly Hills 90210, playing Kelly Taylor for the entire initial run from 1990-2000. The actor was filmed being asked how she felt about the fact that Doherty had been left out. “That’s messed up” she replied. When asked if The Academy should apologise, she said: “Maybe”.

The Charmed star was not the only name left off the list of those remembered during the broadcast. The recently passed Michelle Trachtenberg, Candyman actor Tony Todd, comedy legend Martin Mull, and director Morgan Spurlock were among those not included.
Those names and others were, however, included in an online section on the Oscars website.
People on social media also reacted strongly to David Lynch’s tribute, arguing that the director deserved more than five seconds during the video. Users also decried the use of “such scary music” for the segment – Mozart’s ‘Lacrimosa’ – as “fucking insane”.
