Watch Katy Perry reunite with Rebecca Black to perform ‘Last Friday Night’, and invite her to join ‘Lifetimes’ Tour
Katy Perry has reunited with Rebecca Black during a recent live show, and invited the singer to join her for the ‘Lifetimes’ tour.
The moment took place at a recent show in Los Angeles over the weekend, when Perry took to the stage at the El Rey Theatre.
During the set, Perry performed a rendition of her 2011 hit single ‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’, and brought out Rebecca Black as a surprise guest. It marked somewhat of a reunion for the two, as they both featured in the music video for that track – Black had starred in the video after going viral with her song ‘Friday’.
During the set in Los Angeles, Perry didn’t just bring the singer out for a collaboration performance, she also got down on one knee to propose the idea of them going on the ‘Lifetimes’ tour together.
“Will you…” Perry begins in a clip shared on Instagram, before Black asks: “Marry you?”. Perry continues: “Kinda… join me on the ‘Lifetimes’ Tour?”
Perry shared the clip, alongside a selection of photos of them together on social media alongside the caption: “About to spend a lot more Fridays with @msrebeccablack. WELCOME TO THE LIFETIMES TOUR BABES.” Check it out below.
The carousel post also featured a throwback video from the making-of the ‘Last Friday Night’ video, where Perry spoke about the collaboration.
“Rebecca and I both love Fridays. So that’s why I asked her to be in this music video because Friday is like my favourite day of the week, and it’s her favourite day of the week.”
She went on to discuss the theme of the video, which is centred around a high school party: “We used to be friends in third grade and then something happened. I don’t know what happened, but…”
It isn’t yet clear whether Black is going to perform at all upcoming ‘Lifetimes’ shows, although Perry did tell Rolling Stone about what to expect from the gigs in a new statement. “We’re giving BPM. We’re giving celebration. We’re giving unity. We’re giving dance. It will be like Disneyland on Wheels, as it always is. A feast for the eyes and the ears,” she said.
The ‘Lifetimes’ tour is set to arrive in the UK for a handful of shows later this year. It’ll kick off at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro Arena on October 7, before further dates in Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham and London throughout the month. Visit here for remaining tickets.
It follows the release of Perry’s seventh studio album ‘143‘ last year, and sees her commit to protecting the grassroots venues she played at the beginning of her career – donating £1 from every ticket going to Music Venue Trust (MVT).
‘143‘, was given a two-star review by NME and described as “a record that sometimes hits the target but rarely leaves a lasting impression.”
“Pop fans have a fondness for resurrecting ‘flop’ albums that were given short shrift when they first came out: Mariah Carey’s ill-fated soundtrack album ‘Glitter’ and Christina Aguilera’s sonic hodgepodge ‘Bionic’ have both become cult classics of sorts,” it read. “But even this fate seems unlikely for ‘143’, a serviceable but slightly dull collection on which Perry struggles to relocate her old sense of fun.”
As for Rebecca Black, last month the singer spoke to NME about her time in the music industry and looked back at 14 years of her viral hit.
“I felt this pressure of, like, never being the person to mention it because I didn’t want to be known for just this one thing,” she said.
“I just hope that people can see [my career] for the full journey. I don’t really care whether people think about anything I’ve done in the past, but it’s nice to think they might appreciate the full context.”
