Matthew McConaughey watched Jodie Foster’s ‘True Detective’ but his favourite season is still the original
Matthew McConaughey has revealed he has watched Jodie Foster‘s season of True Detective, though admitted his “favourite” is his own season.
The Oscar-winning actor starred in the first outing of the HBO show back in 2014 alongside Woody Harrelson, with subsequent seasons starring new leads such as Rachel McAdams and Mahershala Ali.
Foster appeared as the lead alongside Kali Reis in last year’s fourth outing, subtitled Night Country, which was regarded as a return to form for the series.
McConaughey, who played Detective Rustin ‘Rust’ Cohle, has now weighed in on season four, sharing his praise.
“I watched, I saw it. Yeah, there’s a lot about it that I appreciated,” he told Variety, though added that he enjoyed his season most, notably as a fan.
“My favourite season – and I feel like I can say this objectively – is Season One,” he said. “I happen to be in that one, so I thought that was incredible, incredible television and a great series.
“I watched it weekly, like everyone else, on Sunday night, and that was an event for me. And I got to sit back and enjoy that. I loved the water cooler talk on Monday morning. Even though I made it, I sort of forgot what was going to happen next. It was one of the great events in TV,” McConaughey added.
Foster won an Emmy last year for her portrayal of Liz Danvers on the show, becoming the first True Detective star to win the prestigious accolade.
Season four focuses on the disappearance of eight men at an Arctic research station, with NME awarding the episodes five stars.
“This iteration of True Detective is a female-driven return to form that weaves supernatural elements and a sensitive mental health narrative into a riveting and intricate detective story,” we said. “It’s not so much a whodunnit as a ‘whatthefuckhappenedhere’.”
In other news, it was revealed last month that True Detective season five will take place in New York’s Jamaica Bay and will air in 2027.
“I’m really excited about it, HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film Francesca Orsi told Deadline. “We have a small writers room going with [showrunner] Issa [Lopez]; she’s excited.
“We just gave notes on the first two episodes, the entire season. Honestly, I can’t wait for this to go. It’s all about casting and getting this ready.”
