Kneecap have played a free, surprise gig in Melbourne’s Federation Square – check out footage from the massive show below.

On Monday (March 10), the Irish rap trio – who are currently touring Australia – announced that they’d be playing a short, impromptu set at Melbourne’s Federation Square around 5pm local time for free as a treat for fans who were unable to score tickets to their originally announced show later that night.

The show drew a massive attendance – while a confirmed attendance has not been determined, footage shows a sea of people gathered at Federation Square for the free gig. Federation Square has estimated that 10,000 people showed up.

The band said while announcing the show: “It’s a bank holiday. I know youse are up to fuck all. It’s a quick gig, half an hour. Free for fucks sake.”

At the free gig, it is reported that Kneecap played hits like ‘3CAG’, ‘Fenian Cunts’, ‘Sick In The Head’, ‘Fine Art’, ‘Get Your Brits Out’ and ‘H.O.O.D’ among others. Later that night, they played a full sold-out show in Melbourne.

The trio are due to play in Brisbane today (March 12) before returning to Melbourne for another pair of sold-out shows on March 13 and 14.

In other news, it has been announced that Kneecap will round off 2025 with a massive arena concert in Dublin. The trio are also set to play their “biggest ever live show” at the city’s Fairview Park this summer.

Additionally, the band will open for Fontaines D.C. in London’s Finsbury Park in July, and at their Manchester show in August. Other scheduled appearances include TRNSMT Festival, Wide Awake and 2000Trees, as well as various European events.

Meanwhile, Kneecap have shared a new version of their fan-favourite track ‘H.O.O.D’ for 2025, as well as a variety of remixes.

Kneecap’s debut LP ‘Fine Art’ landed at Number 13 on NME‘s 50 best albums of 2024 list last month, where it was described as “cheeky, clever [and] countercultural: this is everything you want in a debut album”.

They also released a groundbreaking self-titled film last year, starring Michael Fassbender. In a five-star review, NME called it “ballsy, brave and one of the best music biopics ever made”.
