The nominations for this year’s additions to the Video Game Hall Of Fame have been announced, with Angry Birds, Quake and Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare all shortlisted.

Organised by The Strong National Museum Of Play in New York, the World Video Game Hall Of Fame was opened in 2015. Every year, staff at the museum create a shortlist of games based on four criteria (influence, icon status, longevity and geographical reach) before the public can vote for which title they believe deserves to be added to the Hall Of Fame.

Doom, Tetris and the original Super Mario Bros. were among the first inductees to the World Video Game Hall Of Fame while Minecraft, Animal Crossing and Dance, Dance Revolution have also been added in recent years. Last year, Asteroids, Myst, Resident Evil, SimCity and Ultimata were all inducted.

“The World Video Game Hall of Fame at The Strong recognises electronic games of all types that have enjoyed popularity over a sustained period and have exerted influence on the video game industry or on popular culture and society in general,” explained the museum, which has now revealed the shortlist for this year’s additions.

The 2025 nominations for the World Video Game Hall Of Fame are:

Age Of Empires
Angry Birds
Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Defender
Frogger
Goldeneye 007
Golden Tee Golf
Harvest Moon
Mattel Football
NBA 2K
Quake
Tamagotchi

Votes can be cast here and the ballot closes tomorrow (March 13). The overall winners will then be added to the Hall Of Fame on May 8.

The original Call Of Duty has been shortlisted twice before but has never been inducted, while Modern Warfare was previously nominated in 2023. Goldeneye 007, Age Of Empires, Angry Birds, NBA 2K and Quake were also shortlisted back in 2023 but weren’t chosen for inclusion.

In other news Lena Raine, a celebrated composer who’s worked on music for Celeste and Minecraft, has shared a new album of music from scrapped game Earthblade.
