‘The White Lotus’ star Aimee Lou Wood says audiences wouldn’t believe her as an American: “It’s the teeth!”

The White Lotus star Aimee Lou Wood has said that audiences would struggle to accept her as an American character because of her teeth.

The actress, who broke through in Netflix’s Sex Education, was born and raised in Greater Manchester, and plays Chelsea in the third season of The White Lotus, the younger lover of Walton Goggins’ character Rick.

In a new interview with The Sun, she has revealed that series creator Mike White considered allowing her to put on an American accent for the role, but ultimately settled on her native Manchester voice.

“I can do an American accent,” Wood said. “But Mike just wanted my Manchester one. I did one tape in American and one in my own. And he said, ‘Let’s do Manchester’.”

She went on to share her own theory as to why viewers would find it difficult to believe her as an American. “It’s the teeth!” she claimed. “No Americans have my teeth. I think that genuinely is one of the things.”

“I played an American in a play in Chicago and afterwards this guy in the bar, he was talking to me and he went, ‘I knew it, I knew it. Your accent was great but I knew you weren’t American. You just don’t look American’.”

Wood recently spoke to NME about filming the show, describing the experience as “claustrophobic” and comparing it to The Truman Show – see the interview above.

The third season of HBO’s black comedy series, which is set in a luxury hotel resort in Thailand, is airing every Sunday night in the US, with the fifth episode arriving tonight (March 16).

Episode four, meanwhile, included a much-discussed scene in which Jason Isaacs’ character Timothy is exposed in a full-frontal shot, with fans on social media reacting with lewd jokes to the shocking sight.

Isaacs himself was said to be “very excited” to shoot the scene, but the actor has since called out what he considers to be gendered “double standards” when nude scenes are discussed in the media.

“I think it’s interesting that there’s a double standard for men, but when women are naked, [like] Margaret Qualley in The Substance, no one would dream of talking to her about her genitalia or her nipples or any of those things. So, it’s odd that there’s a double standard,” he said.
