Here’s why Abby killed Joel in ‘The Last of Us’

The Last of Us Abby Killed Joel Explained: Kaitlyn Dever as Abby can be seen crouching in front of some crosses.

Joel finally went on his golfing trip in The Last of Us Season 2, and it was a moment that underpins the core themes of this season and the entire second game. But why did Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever, do what she did, and what are the exact motivations behind her five-year-long hunt for Joel?

We break it all down below, but be warned, there are spoilers for Episode 2: Through the Valley of ‘The Last of Us’, as well as some spoilers about Abby, which will likely be revealed in an episode later this season.

Ultimately, Abby killed Joel and spent five years hunting him down because Joel shot and killed her father in the hospital at the end of The Last of Us Season 1 and in the first game. When he took Ellie from the Fireflies’ hospital, he shot the doctors who were trying to create a vaccine. One of those doctors, the lead doctor, was Gerald Anderson (known as Jerry).

This put Abby on her path to hunt down Joel and get revenge for what he did to her father. We should get a deeper look at her journey to get to this point, where anger has fueled her and consumed her in Season 2 of the show. Jeffrey Wright is returning to play Isaac, the leader of the Washington Liberation Front (WLF), which we know Abby went to spend time with in Seattle after the events at the hospital.

The game also spends a lot of time focusing on the events preceding Joel’s death and following it from both Ellie’s and Abby’s points of view, and the consequences of both of their actions. So, expect both characters to be a key focus for the rest of Season 2 and Season 3, which will continue the story of The Last of Us Part II.
