’10 Things I Hate About You’ being adapted for Broadway, Carly Rae Jepsen and Lena Dunham confirmed in creative roles
A Broadway adaptation of the 1999 teen film 10 Things I Hate About You has been confirmed, with Carly Rae Jepsen and Lena Dunham landing creative roles.
Per a Billboard report, 10 Things I Hate About You – which was itself a retelling of Shakespeare’s 1594 play The Taming of the Shrew – is receiving a Broadway musical. While a premiere date nor its cast have been announced, two major creative roles attached to the adaptation have been revealed.
Co-writing the musical’s score is Carly Rae Jepsen, who will be working on it with singer, writer and producer Ethan Gruska. Gruska worked extensively with Jepsen on her 2023 album ‘The Loveliest Time’ (the follow-up to 2022’s ‘The Loneliest Time’), and has in the past also worked with acts like Bon Iver and Phoebe Bridgers.
Meanwhile, Lena Dunham – who co-wrote HBO‘s hit coming-of-age teen drama Girls – will co-write the Broadway play alongside playwright Jessica Huang.
The adaptation’s creative team also includes Tony-winning director-choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, music supervisor Tom Kitt and Beautiful – The Carole King Musical producer Mike Bosner.
Released in 1999, 10 Things I Hate About You helped to launch the careers of Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Speaking to NME in 2020 following the film’s 20th anniversary, Stiles reflected: “For me, it was such a special moment because it was my big break. I remember, vividly, the scene where I read the poem because it was towards the end of filming. It was such a genuine, unexpected feeling when I break down crying and that was emblematic of how I felt during the whole experience.
“We were all really present and it was just so uninhibited. None of the actors felt jaded or shut down [on the set]. We were all having a great time.”
In a four-star review of Carly Rae Jepsen’s 2022 album ‘The Loneliest Time’, Hannah Mylrea wrote for NME: “Fully fleshed out pop songs with endless charm, if this is what living in the moment sounds like, it suits her.”
