Jack Black also working on Weezer film, says Rivers Cuomo

Jack Black Weezer

Jack Black has been revealed as the latest cast member of the forthcoming Weezer movie, as confirmed by frontman Rivers Cuomo.

The film was announced by the band during their appearance at this month’s Coachella, with Cuomo telling the crowd: “We’ve been busy making the Weezer movie back in LA the last couple weeks”.

Journalist Jeff Sneider revealed that the movie would be a documentary, with Keanu Reeves playing the villain, and pitched as a mix of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

Black’s involvement was announced via Cuomo himself on the band’s Discord server, as he shared an AI generated image of a movie poster for the film reading: “Weezer – Co-starring Jack Black”. Seemingly expecting disbelief from fans, the singer captioned the image with the words: “Nope, it’s real”.

This won’t be the first collaboration between the actor and the band. Black toured with Weezer as part of Tenacious D in 2001, while his wife Tanya Haden played cello on Weezer’s cover of Green Day’s ‘Worry Rock’ in 2003.

Currently riding high at the box office with A Minecraft Movie, Black enjoyed some music-related success off of the back of the film. Steve’s Lava Chicken, a 34 second song, became the shortest entry into the UK Top 40 when it landed at number 21 this month.

It marks Black’s highest ever charting single in the UK, overtaking ‘Peaches’ from The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, which made it to Number 27. Tenacious D have also made the charts in the past with ‘POD’ (24) and ‘Tribute’ (84).

Meanwhile, Weezer were recently announced as headliners for the 2025 Riot Fest, alongside Green Day and Blink-182. The 20th anniversary edition of the three-day punk rock festival will take place at Douglass Park in Chicago, Illinois, between September 19-21.
