A new ’24’ film is reportedly in the works
A film adaptation of television series 24 is in “early development” according to reports.
As per Variety, the film is reportedly in development at 20th Century Studios according to sources who spoke to the outlet.
The original series was created by Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran for Fox and ran for nine seasons between 2001 and 2014. A television film called Redemption arrived in 2008 and a spin-off, 24: Legacy, aired in 2016.
In the original incarnation of the show, Kiefer Sutherland starred as Jack Bauer, an agent from a fictitious “Counter Terrorist Unit” (CTU) in the US government. Each episode famously followed a 24 hour structure in real-time.
The series received 68 Emmy nominations and won 20 during its run, including ones for outstanding drama series and lead actor for Sutherland.
Back in 2020, a revival of 24 was first teased, with reports of Kiefer Sunderland reprising his role as Jack Bauer. Former 24 showrunner Howard Gordon teased the news of a new project at a Homeland panel, according to Deadline at the time.
Earlier this year, Imagine Entertainment co-founder Brian Grazer also teased the project.
As per Variety, he said: “Imagine has always played in that zone where there is that high probability chance that it will be successful in movie theatres. It’s great for us, because we’ve built, over 30 years, over 100 different products and brands, whether it’s ‘Backdraft,’ which I’m now going to do today with Glen Powell, or whether it’s 24, a movie that we’re going to do in a very interesting way with Disney and Fox.”
As yet, there is no official confirmation on the project of if Sutherland will return to his role as Bauer. NME has reached out to 20th Century Studios for comment.
Last month, Donald Sutherland, father of Kiefer, died aged 88.
With a career dating back to the 1950s, Donald was widely regarded as one of the most versatile and respected actors in Hollywood, winning numerous prestigious awards for his work in both film and television.
Kiefer announced the new on X (June 20). The statement read: “With a heavy heart I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film.
“Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly,” he continued. “He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”
In 2017, Donald received an Honorary Oscar “for a lifetime of indelible character, rendered with unwavering truthfulness.” He was survived by his wife and five children, who include Kiefer, the actor Rossif Sutherland and the producer Angus Sutherland.
