Andrew Garfield says he would do another ‘Spider-Man’ film on one condition

Andrew Garfield has talked about what it would take to bring him back to the role of Spider-man.

The Oscar-nominated star played Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-man and sequel in the early 2010s. He was succeeded by Tom Holland, but reprised the role in 2021’s multiverse blockbuster Spider-man: No Way Home.

Garfield is not officially attached to any of the forthcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects, but was asked at this past weekend’s Middle East Comic Con (reported by Entertainment Tonight) what circumstances would make him keen to come back to the franchise.

“It would have to be very weird,” Garfield answered. “I would like to do something very strange. Something very unique, and offbeat and surprising, kind of like the creative freedom they have with the animated Spider-Verse movies”.

2018’s Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse was an animated take on Miles Morales, a teenager who, in an alternative universe, takes over the mantle of Spider-man from Peter Parker before joining up with several other Spider-people to save their timelines from collapsing.

It has been praised for its innovative storytelling and humour, getting a sequel in 2023 and inspiring the forthcoming series Spider-Noir, based on Nicolas Cage’s character in the films.

It’s not the first time Garfield has discussed coming back to the role that made him a household name. Last October, he talked to GQ about the possibility of returning. “For sure, I would 100% come back if it was the right thing,” he said. “if it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before that’s unique and odd and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into”.

He continued: “I love that character, and it brings joy. If part of what I bring is joy, then I’m joyful in return”.

Late last year, Andrew Garfield went viral for talking about his late mother on an episode of Sesame Street.
