Anne Hathaway confirms ‘Princess Diaries 3’ is coming: “The fairy tale continues”
Anne Hathaway has confirmed a third instalment of the Princess Diaries is coming.
Adapted from Meg Cabot’s novels, the much-loved first two films follow Hathaway’s Mia Thermopolis – an awkward teenager who learns she is the heir to the throne of the fictional nation Genovia.
Adele Lim (Joy Ride) is attached to direct and told Deadline in a statement: “As a die-hard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life.
“We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”
Now, Hathaway, has confirmed she’ll be returning for the film, taking to Instagram to share she’ll be “back to Genovia”. Alongside a clip of herself quoting the first two films, she captioned the post: “The fairy tale continues.”
As yet it’s unknown if Julie Andrews, who plays her grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi, will return to the franchise. The actor had told TODAY earlier this year that “sometimes it’s best to leave a good thing alone”.
“It’s quite a long time now since the two Diaries were done,” she said at the time. “I’m not sure, but sometimes it’s best to leave a good thing alone. I don’t like it when people milk and milk and milk the subject, you know, ’til it’s dead.”
News of the third film comes on the heels of similarly 2000s fuelled film nostalgia, with a The Devil Wears Prada sequel reportedly in the works, as well as Lindsay Lohan confirming a Freaky Friday sequel with Jamie Lee Curtis earlier this year.
Fashion-focused comedy-drama The Devil Wears Prada is supposedly moving forward, with Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt returning to reprise their roles as Miranda Priestly and Emily Charlton accordingly, however, Hathaway is not thought to be returning.
