Assassin’s Creed Shadows was announced in May 2024 with a November release date. However, after the “softer than expected” sales of Star Wars Outlaws caused by the game’s messy launch, developers confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows would be delayed until February 2025.
In a note to investors, the studio explained that “learnings from the Star Wars Outlaws release led us to provide additional time to further polish the title.”
Yesterday (January 9) Ubisoft revealed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows would be delayed again. The game is now due for release March 20.
“Since November, we’ve been thrilled to share our progress through Gameplay Overviews, and each week has brought valuable feedback from our community. While we’ve already made remarkable strides, we believe a few additional weeks are needed to implement that feedback and ensure an even more ambitious and engaging day-one experience.”

“This game will make or break a whole company so take all the time you need, better to have a good first impression,” wrote one fan in response to the news. “Delayed again, this is going to be the death of Ubisoft,” added another.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set in 16th century Japan, with players taking control of guerrilla warfare expert Naoe and samurai Yasuke, who is based on the historical figure of the same name. “Switch between these two unlikely allies as you discover their common destiny and usher in a new era for Japan,” reads the official description of the game.
Last year, Ubisoft was criticised for a “cowardly apology” after the inclusion of “Japan’s First Black Samurai” drew criticism for its historical inaccuracy, despite leading experts saying there is no debate about Yasuke’s status as a samurai.
It’s also been reported that the studio plans to release 10 Assassin’s Creed games in the next five years. The Fall Guys-inspired free-to-play shooter Invictus, mobile game Jade and a remake of Black Flag could all potentially be released this year while the horror-inspired Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe has also been announced.
In other news, Nintendo has announced its latest collaboration with LEGO, a recreation of the iconic Game Boy.
