Avatar: The Last Airbender first blessed our screens in 2005 as a Nickelodeon cartoon series for three action-packed seasons, and again in 2010 as a live-adaptation movie. Now, Netflix has brought the beloved show back to TV through a new live-action series, which debuted at No. 1 on the streaming platform’s top 10.
All eight episodes of the latest adaption are available to stream now, featuring easter eggs and callouts to the original animated series that fans can appreciate. For those unfamiliar with the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender, the animated series takes place in a society split into four nations: the Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation and Air Nomads. Within this society are unique people labeled as “Benders,” who have the ability to telekinetically control an element within their tribe. The Avatar is a one-of-a-kind bender who has the ability to control all four elements –and is the only person who is able to do so. After one Avatar dies, they’re reincarnated as another person and aren’t born into the same element twice in a row.

You’ll want to watch the animated shows based on their release dates. Avatar: The Last Airbender was the first to be released and has a total of three seasons. Following that is The Legend of Korra, which takes places years after the events of the first series and features characters from the original series, which is why you’ll want to start with the original series to fully understand the callouts of The Legend of Korra.
