Ben Schwartz teases ‘Sonic The Hedgehog 4’: “Every one of these movies almost feels like a different genre”
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 star Ben Schwartz has given hints as to what its recently-announced sequel has in store.
Its latest film, released today (December 20) in US cinemas, in the Sega video game franchise sees Sonic (Schwartz), Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba) forge an unlikely alliance with Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) as they take on Keanu Reeves’ antagonist Shadow The Hedgehog.
The third film draws inspiration from the early ’00s video games, Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow The Hedgehog. No plot details for the fourth film have been revealed but it is slated for release in spring 2027.
However, Schwartz has shared more about the fourth film in a new interview with Variety published today. When asked about the sequel, Schwartz said that the ending of Sonic 3 teases what “I hope we would do for the fourth”.
“There is a beautiful storyline that can be used, and it takes our movie in a whole different place,” he said. “That’s what makes these exciting.”
He added: “Every one of these movies almost feels like a different genre. The first one’s kind of a buddy comedy. The second one’s kind of like an adventure, Indiana Jones movie. This one brings the darkness in Shadow, and the next one can have a totally different vibe. It’s just heaven.”
Schwartz also hinted at the introduction of new characters in Sonic 4: “We can get incredible people to play new characters and stuff like that, which is very exciting.” O’Shaughnessy’s Tails was introduced in a mid-credits scene in the first Sonic film, while Elba’s Knuckles arrived in Sonic 2.
Meanwhile, Carrey recently said that he decided to star in Sonic The Hedgehog 3 because he “needs the money, frankly”.
Attending the UK premiere in London last week, he was asked why he signed up for the film, after stating after Sonic The Hedgehog 2 in 2022 that he was considering retiring from acting.
“I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch,” he said. “And, you know, it’s just, I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.”
When pressed about his previous hints at retirement, he added: “That might have been hyperbole.”
Carrey previously told Access Hollywood in 2022: “Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious. It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”
The actor went on: “I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas, I really love my spiritual life and I feel like – and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists – I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”
