Biggest-selling DVDs and Blu-rays of 2024 revealed
Two Timothée Chalamet films topped the charts for DVD and Blu-ray films in 2024, according to figures released by The British Association for Screen Entertainment (BASE).
Dune: Part Two topped the charts for disc sales, with the epic sci-fi sequel selling 132,000 copies on both DVD and Blu-ray formats. This was followed by Chalamet’s family film Wonka, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, and Deadpool & Wolverine. DC action film Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom rounds out the top five.
In the TV markets, the Game of Thrones franchise ruled supreme, with prequel show House Of The Dragon taking the top two spots in the TV disc chart. Season one was first with 31,000 copies sold, while the recent second season was behind it with 24,000.
Over the years, DVD and Blu-Ray have come to share the home entertainment space with streaming and Video On Demand (VOD). When accounting for psychical media and digital formats, Wonka took the top spot with 821,000 purchases and rentals across all platforms. 2023’s best selling disc, Oppenheimer, became 2024’s most popular rental, with 487,000 units sold.
Liz Bales, Chief Executive of BASE, said in a statement: “Visual entertainment in the UK ended 2024 with a bang! In November the UK Box Office was up 78 per cent year-on-year with 13.24million admissions, and Home Entertainment surpassed a value of £5billion for the first time, the largest player in the £12billion UK Home Entertainment sector”.
Chalamet follows up with the success of Dune: Part Two with A Complete Unknown, released in UK cinemas on January 17.
Despite winning praise for his portrayal of music icon Bob Dylan, fans were surprised he was snubbed at the recent Golden Globes ceremony, with one user dubbing him “the next Leonardo DiCaprio”. At the awards, jokes were also made at his expense by host Nikki Glaser.
