Billie Eilish Reveals She’s ‘Never Been Dumped’: ‘I’ve Only Done the Breaking Up’
Billie Eilish has done a lot of things, but one thing she’s never experienced is getting dumped.
In a discussion conducted by Lana Del Rey for Interview, the 22-year-old pop star revealed that she’s never been broken up with — but you shouldn’t be too quick to label her a “heartbreaker,” either. “I’m not going to get too in detail, because I’m going to be rude, but I’ve never been dumped,” she said in the article published Thursday (June 13). “And also, I’ve never been broken up with. I’ve only done the breaking up.”
“I think when people hear that, they’re like, ‘Oh, all you do is break hearts,'” she continued. “Sure, but that doesn’t mean that people are totally innocent. It means that I was like, ‘Oh, let me get the f–k out of here.’ Or it means things just weren’t right.”
“I don’t know how many times I’ve really been in love,” Eilish added. “I think there’s different versions of love, and I think that you can be in love and it might not be deep.”
The nine-time Grammy winner was most recently romantically linked to The Neighbourhood’s Jesse Rutherford. The pair dated for about seven months before splitting in May 2023.
Eilish has since released her third studio album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. All of its tracks charted on the Billboard Hot 100 upon its release, led by the single “Lunch,” which entered at No. 5.
On “Lunch,” Eilish sings directly about having feelings for women for the first time in her career. “I’m lucky that we’re in a period of time that is so much more welcoming in a lot of ways,” she told Del Rey of the track. “It’s still a big deal, but it’s not. The thing that’s been frustrating and gives me a lot of anxiety is the feeling of needing to explain myself all the time.”
“It’s so weird to grow up and change in front of the world,” she added. “The craziest part is discovering things about myself and then suddenly, everyone else knows, and I don’t even have a second to think about how it makes me feel.”
