Billie Eilish’s ‘When the Party’s Over’ Returns to Charts Thanks to Nicki Minaj Sample
Billie Eilish’s “When the Party’s Over” returns to Billboard’s charts thanks to its sample in “Are You Gone Already,” the first track on Nicki Minaj’s new album, Pink Friday 2.
The 2018 track bows at No. 25 on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs ranking dated Dec. 23. (Older songs are eligible for Billboard’s multi-metric song charts if ranking in the top half with meaningful reasons for their resurgences.) The song earned 2.8 million official U.S. streams – up 13% week-over-week – Dec. 8-14, according to Luminate. Eilish’s track also ranks at No. 14 on Hot Alternative Songs.
“When the Party’s Over” was released in October 2018 and included on Eilish’s debut 2019 album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? The cut reached No. 3 on the Alternative Digital Song Sales in January 2019 and peaked at No. 29 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 that April.
The song’s parent album has earned 7.4 million equivalent album units to date. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in April 2019 and reigned for three weeks.
Minaj’s “Are You Gone Already,” which features a portion of Eilish’s vocal from “When the Party’s Over” pitched up, starts with 10.1 million streams and 4,000 downloads and debuts at No. 60 on the Hot 100. It’s one of 14 songs from Pink Friday 2 on the ranking.
The LP launches at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 228,000 equivalent album units in its first week – the largest frame for a rap album by a woman in the 2020s, and the biggest for an R&B/hip-hop album by a woman this year.
