BLACKPINK’s Jennie on collaborating with Doechii: “I knew what I wanted”
BLACKPINK‘s Jennie has opened up about working with Doechii and the creative process behind her upcoming solo album, ‘Ruby’.
BLACKPINK singer Jennie was recently interviewed on Hits Radio, where she teased more about her upcoming debut solo album ‘Ruby’, the collaborations she worked on for the record and potential future plans for performances in support of the release.
When asked about how early plans for her collaboration with Doechii on ‘Ruby’ were put in place, Jennie said: “knew what I wanted, so I’ve been manifesting it for the longest time.” The singer added that “it takes time and things need to really work out and coordinate together for a song to work out, and it magically did”.
She also shared that the creation of a full album on her own was a “new experience” for her. “I really just had to break through that wall and find myself before I got into the studio with any other artist. So, once I got through that wall within myself, everything else just fell really naturally and easy,” she explained.
Jennie also went on to share what she thought of the album’s creation process: “I think for this whole album, every little step was experimenting and going out of that comfort zone and really trying something new and fun and being crazy and bold and vulnerable. So many different emotions have been put into this album.”
When asked about what her upcoming solo Coachella set will look like, Jennie mentioned that she “knew how [she] wanted to present it to the world for the first time” while working on the record. “Not necessarily for Coachella, but I’ve already started visioning this album as a live performance in my head over and over again that it’s now time to make it into the real world,” she said.
Due out March 7, ‘Ruby’ will mark Jennie’s first solo record with 12 tracks in total, featuring artists such as Childish Gambino, Dua Lipa, FKJ, Kali Uchis and more. The BLACKPINK singer has already dropped three singles ahead of the album: October 2024’s ‘Mantra’, ‘Zen’ and ‘Love Hangover’ with Dominic Fike.
