‘Bloodhounds’ star Kim Sae-ron’s cause of death revealed

South Korean actress Kim Sae-ron’s cause of death has been revealed.

Kim’s death was announced on Sunday (February 16) after her body was discovered in her home by a friend. She was 24 years old. At the time of the news of her death, South Korean authorities did not share a cause of death but had ruled out foul play.

Now, a cause of death has been determined, with authorities treating her death as suicide, per Yonhap and an additional report from the New York Times. Local authorities told Yonhap: “We believe she made an extreme choice and plan to handle it as a suicide.”

Additionally, it has been reported that Kim Sae-ron did not leave behind a note.

She was best known for her role in the 2023 Netflix show Bloodhounds, where she played Cha Hyun-joo, the successor and granddaughter of loan shark Choi Tae-ho (Hug Joon-ho). Kim had been acting professionally since the age of nine, starring in 2010 action film The Man From Nowhere and 2012 thriller The Neighbour.

Her involvement in Bloodhounds represented a major breakthrough in terms of international exposure, although it was somewhat marred by a drink driving arrest in May 2022, for which she was later fined 20million won (£11,000) in April 2023. The accident had reportedly resulted in a damaged transformer, causing several buildings in the vicinity to cease regular operations due to electrical shortages.

After backlash due to the arrest and a fine, it is thought that her character’s narrative arc was reduced in the show. She apologised for the controversy, saying: “I made a big mistake by being drunk at that time. I am also very sorry to the production crew, including fellow actors and staff, for interrupting the production of the work that is being shot and the work that was being prepared. There is no excuse for this unfortunate incident and I am disappointed and so ashamed of my mistake. I will reflect and reflect again and again so that this never happens again. I’m sorry.”

Kim Sae-ron was also blacklisted by the South Korean industry, with the actress being banned from national broadcaster KBS’s programming in 2023.
