Bon Iver shares joyful new single ‘Everything Is Peaceful Love’
Bon Iver has shared a new single called ‘Everything Is Peaceful Love’ – you can listen to it below.
The track will appear on the Justin Vernon-led project’s fifth studio album ‘SABLE, fABLE’, which is due for release on April 11 via Jagjaguwar (pre-order/pre-save here).
It’ll mark Bon Iver’s first full-length record since 2019’s ‘i, i’, and follow last year’s ‘SABLE’ EP. The three songs featured on the latter collection – ‘Things Behind Things Behind Things’, ‘S P E Y S I D E’ and ‘Awards Season’ – will open the new LP.
Arriving today (February 14), ‘SABLE, fABLE’ lead single ‘Everything Is Peaceful Love’ sees Vernon team up with filmmaker John Wilson on the upcoming accompanying visuals. The former sings atop a glitchy and electronic instrumental on the bright, uplifting and romantic track.
“‘Everything Is Peaceful Love’ gives me what I want for this album, all in one video,” Vernon said of the forthcoming clip, shot and edited by Wilson – best known for HBO‘s How To With John Wilson.
“The idea that happiness and joy are the highest form and the true buoyancy of survival, and even taking yourself less seriously could heal the world.”
Vernon continued: “I knew what kind of record I wanted to make the day we made ‘Everything Is Peaceful Love’. I always knew that would be the feeling I wanted to share first.
“I wanted the video to just be people smiling uncontainably. Luckily, Eric Timothy Carlson suggested getting in touch with Wilson. Simply the most poignant and hilarious program in all of television. We were extremely fortunate that John liked the idea. He went out, shot a bunch of fun stuff, and edited it all to the song.”
The new song is described as “the portrait of a man overwhelmed with happiness upon meeting the one he will fall in love with”.
The ‘Everything Is Peaceful Love’ video will premiere at 3pm GMT today – you’ll be able to watch it below. In the meantime, you can listen to the new single above now via Spotify.
Last year’s ‘SABLE’ EP served as a “prologue” to Bon Iver’s fifth album. ‘SABLE, fABLE’ is also set to feature a collaboration with Haim frontwoman Danielle Haim, titled ‘If Only I Could Wait’.
Other track titles include ‘Short Story’, ‘Day One’ (feat. Dijon and Flock Of Dimes), ‘There’s A Rhythm’ and ‘Au Revoir’.
Produced by Vernon and Jim-E Stack, ‘SABLE, fABLE’ was primarily recorded at Vernon’s April Base studio in Wisconsin. A press release notes that the “conceptual genesis” for the LP occurred in early February 2022, “when Stack arrived at the Base with Danielle Haim”.
It adds: “Snowed in for multiple days, Vernon and Haim’s voices intertwined on ‘If Only I Could Wait’, a duet with crucial perspective, about not having the strength to be the best version of yourself outside the glow of new love.”
The description continues: “Like fables, each track instils a lesson, and ‘…fABLE’ is about the selfless rhythm required when one is enmeshed with another person or lover – a patient commitment to finding the pace for betterness, and togetherness,” the description continues.
“Gone are the evasive and dense layers of sound that guarded Justin Vernon’s voice on ‘i, i’ and [2016’s] ’22, A Million’. The previous four albums were a cycle of seasons that is now complete; ‘SABLE, fABLE’ is a canvas for truth laid bare.”
In a four-star review of Bon Iver’s 2024 EP, NME wrote: “‘SABLE’ can serve as a reminder of the light at the end of the tunnel, and a reason to push through adversity – to move forward onto a new chapter.”
